FAQ Category: Installation

CAN THESE BE PLACED OVER A CONCRETE PATIO WITHOUT REMOVING CARPET?

Such a patio may not provide sufficient flatness to support these deck tiles. With that said, at 2.5 pounds per tile, they may have enough weight to flatten the carpet. If you would like to test to confirm, you can do so by requesting a sample through our contact page here: https://www.newtechwood.com/contact/.

CAN THE DECK TILES BE INSTALLED ON AN EXISTING WOOD DECK?

The boards have to be placed over a structurally sound surface, so we would not recommend using a porch that has existing issues. One alternative solution would be to provide stability to your existing porch, perhaps through the use of wooden planks and then place these tiles on top of this wooden surface.

CAN NEWTECHWOOD DECK TILES BE USED OVER A SKIM COAT SURFACE?

If your existing concrete patio needs to be restored to a smoother surface using a skim coat, that would serve as best practices. You can then lay the deck tiles on top of this skim coat without issue, sufficiently meeting the criteria for a flat, structurally sound surface for the deck tiles.

CAN NEWTECHWOOD DECK TILES BE PLACED OVER A PLYWOOD BASE?

Yes, that would be totally fine. Please ensure this plywood base is flat and structurally sound.

CAN NEWTECHWOOD DECK TILES BE INSTALLED ON A PEDESTAL SUPPORT SYSTEM?

Due to structural issues, our deck tiles would not be sufficiently supported when in use with a pedestal system. We will introduce such a system in the future, possibly as soon as early 2019. However, it may be possible to use a pedestal system, place pressure treated plywood above it, and then use the deck tiles on top of the deck boards.

CAN NEWTECHWOOD DECK TILES BE ADHERED TO A SURFACE IN ANY WAY?

While some customers have had limited success with Liquid Nails, the weight of each deck tile (2.5 lbs / sqft), and their collective weight connected over the entirety of your deck should prevent them from moving around.

CAN I INSTALL THE DECK TILES ON A BITUMEN SURFACE?

Yes, you can.

CAN I INSTALL A GAZEBO OR OTHER SUCH STRUCTURE INTO THE DECK TILES?

The deck ties are not designed to have anything screwed into them. Our recommendation would be to screw directly into the substrate and then cut around the deck tiles.

CAN GRASS TILES AND DECK TILES BE CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER?

Yes, any NewTechWood US-QD line product including the deck tiles, grass tiles, and planter boxes, can be connect to each other, as they all have identical dovetail connectors.

WHEN BOARDS ARE PLACED END TO END, SHOULD I LEAVE A GAP?

It depends. If you expect the boards to contract (that is, it will get colder in your area from when they are installed), you may place the boards end to end to allow for contraction. Conversely, if you expect it to get hotter in your area, please leave a gap to allow for expansion. Specific recommendations can be seen in the chart on page 4.
